Schools' Workshops at Glasgow Museums 2007–2008
Our Education Service provides programmes and resources for education providers from pre-school to higher education, including activity sheets linked to the collections, handling boxes and in-service training for teachers and other education professionals.
Pre-5s, Primary and ASL
The programme for Pre-5s, Primary and ASL has many exciting new workshops this year, and we are delighted that some will be co-led by specialist partners.
At the Museum of Transport, apprentices from Rolls-Royce will show children how engines work, and we hope to help inspire an enthusiasm for science.
At Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, we are embarking on a major Heritage Lottery funded project with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). Educators from the RSPB will support many of our environmental and natural history workshops, and together we will take children out into Kelvingrove Park to study nature at first-hand.
Education staff at Glasgow Museums will be putting into practice recent training for working with young people who have sensory impairment. We invite schools to try the workshops – please phone us for more information.
As the Curriculum for Excellence takes shape, please remember that much of what we do at Glasgow Museums supports it – encouraging the capacities of successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors
Secondary, ASL
We have increased the number and range of workshops on offer and many exciting new activities are detailed in the What’s On for Schools, Secondary, ASL.
There is now a workshop for English – a session led by poet Brian Whittingham, during which pupils will write poems and other work in response to paintings at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. At a new Drama workshop, pupils will experiment with using masks and physical movement to convey narrative and express emotion.
Some of the many events for Art and Design give pupils the chance to meet professional artists and designers – to hear talks, get careers advice, and attend practical masterclasses.
To help bring History to life, we have an informative walking tour of the Merchant City. And at the workshop Suffragettes, and actress plays out protests and asks for pupils’ support. This is a lively and engaging session – active learning at its best.
There are several workshops that are ideal for Religious and Moral Education, Citizenship and Modern Studies. In the free workshop Towards Understanding Slavery – Past and Present, which marks the 200th anniversary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act, pupils will consider human rights and crimes against humanity.
There are a number of new workshops for young people with sensory impairment, for which Education staff at Glasgow Museums have recently received training.
For further information, or to book a workshop, please phone 0141 276 9505 or 0141 276 9506.
All Glasgow Museums’ workshops can be tailored for Additional Support for Learning (ASL).
