THE PROJECT

Sanctuary is the first project to be launched as part of the new integrated biannual exhibition, events and inclusion strategy for Culture and Leisure Services. The exhibition Sanctuary–Contemporary Art and Human Rights opened to the public on 10th April 2003.

Sanctuary was developed in partnership with Amnesty International and the Scottish Refugee Council and the exhibition has attracted work from major contemporary international artists to the Gallery of Modern Art. In addition to the exhibition, Sanctuary: the project is a fifteen-month programme of outreach workshops with asylum seekers and refugees across the city.

The project began in October 2002 and has worked with over 1000 participants, of all ages and nationalities, in various community centres in Glasgow. The exhibition of work from the Makhbul Youth Group, UMOJA, Bridging the Gap, Tron St. Mary’s Church and The Scottish Refuge Council opened alongside the main exhibition in April – the opening was attended by over 1100 people.

To support the workshop programme Sanctuary was part of a series of city-wide multi-arts events, with film, dance, music, visual arts and performance events happening from April – September 2003. Sanctuary will also hosted a Selling Show benefiting Amnesty International and the Scottish Refugee Council, which opened in GoMA on 9th May 2003.

Sanctuary: the project is building upon the existing Glasgow City Council initiatives with asylum seekers and refugees (including the work of Libraries, the Open Museum Resource, Arts Development, Youth Services and Community Action Teams).

It is also working in partnership with a number of voluntary organisations across the city in order to ensure that the project is open to a range of people and they feel encouraged to participate. The links forged through this project will form the basis of a community network for further projects, increasing the communication about the ongoing provision of creative opportunities for people living in Glasgow.
