Red Road Women’s Centre
The main aim of the project is to provide opportunities for all local women to relieve isolation. This includes offering access to and information on education and training, health, welfare benefits, legal services, housing issues etc. The centre provides advice/ support service, particularly in crisis, on issues such as domestic/sexual abuse. The centre is devoted to implementing a holistic approach in dealing with women’s well-being.
Summary of Project
The women worked on a short film for the six-week project. They began the project by discussing various topics, which they could develop into a film. Over the next five weeks the women developed the ideas, filmed the action, created the ‘props’ – lots
of amazing food from their countries - and worked on the layout of the film ie: what footage should be used and what should be dumped. The artists then edited the film before showing it to the group for final approval. The film shows the footage in
and around the centre taken by the women and records some of the places where they live and shop.
Artist’s comments
- ‘ I thoroughly enjoyed working with the women’s group for many reasons, but in particular because of the group’s vibrant and diverse dynamic, which also created a fantastic basis for the film. I believe that this reason, coupled with the women’s high level of generosity and ability, successfully made the final film a subtle insight into the women’s lives and experiences at the Red Road Women’s Centre, Glasgow.’
