BRIDGING THE GAP
Bridging the Gap is a community project serving the Gorbals. At present it supports children through homework clubs and a peer tutoring programme and supports refugee and asylum seekers by offering a drop-in facility, English classes and advice and information in association with other local organisations and volunteers.

The project
The project took place in the Bridging the Gap drop-in centre and developed work with the adults and pre-fives over the six weeks the artists were there. Initially, people made drawings with various themes and took photographs of each other or the general
space. The group split and developed into some making cardboard sculptures, while others became much more involved in creating a studio atmosphere so everybody could get their photographs taken by Anna, one of the artists. The final work for the exhibition
was developed using these ‘studio’ portraits and text written by participants.
The comments
- ‘The best thing was the integration of men and women in the project. Usually the men don’t get involved but in this instance they did. The worst thing was it was too short. The artists and drop in attendees were starting to work well when it finished.’
- ‘I liked the tutors they tried very hard to get to know us and I liked the fact they accorded us enough value to come along and do this.’
- ‘I liked the photographs because we don’t do this very often’
- ‘it was very good to see this kind of thing going on’
- ‘The best thing was being able to learn something and develop skills like that – that was nice’
What do you think we can do to make this project better
- ‘Make it a time when children can come along too’
