CRANHILL JUBILEE BANNER PROJECT

The project was developed by the Cranhill Community Project, Greater Easterhouse Arts Team and Sanctuary: the project. The main focus of the project was to create a large-scale banner by the community to celebrate the Cranhill community and leave a lasting reminder of the Jubilee.

Sanctuary ran workshops for the first part of the project to develop a core group, which would design and help create the banner. The core group consisted of the FIG group (fun information and get-together cross community group), which exists to encourage joint working and communications across the community and the English classes, which are run in Cranhill Parish Church. There were 7 workshops and one visit to the People’s Palace Museum to look at banners in the collection.

Sanctuary worked on the first part of the project and other artists were then recruited to run workshops with community groups, primary schools and at the Jubilee Day at Cranhill Beacon. The banner was installed in the Cranhill Community Church on June 21st for the Jubilee service on June 22nd.

Summary:
The groups were selected by Cranhill Community Project and Greater Easterhouse Arts Team and two artists from Sanctuary: the project ran the 6 week block of workshops. The initial groups were mostly adults, with some children who were not at school because they were too young or about for a particular reason. Interpreters were very useful in initial sessions to explain the project, as most of the groups were on a drop in basis and people arrived and left at different times. All the groups produced a lot of work on paper and some of the panels, which would eventually go on the banner. The initial workshops were structured to gather ideas for the banner and stories, recollections of Cranhill and other countries where people had come from. People talked about their home, both in Cranhill and their original country and drew pictures from these discussions.
