Weekend and one-off Workshops

The exhibition shows work by refugees and asylum seekers living in Glasgow. They have been working with contemporary artists in a series of outreach workshops across Glasgow. The work here is their response to themes raised in Sanctuary.

People from many different countries and of all ages have been taking part. Sessions have been held in drop-in centres across the city and the education studio at GoMA since October 2002 and will continue until the end of 2003.

All the participants have created work which explores issues important to them. Many looked at identity – some present who they are, others show who they would like to be. The idea of ‘home’ is explored – both where people live now or in their native land.

People’s experience ranges from professional or aspiring artist to complete beginner. In the workshops the artists are there to help participants develop their ideas visually in a wide range of media, whatever their experience.
