Walking tour
Walking tour from McLellan Galleries on Sauchiehall Street.

Starting at McLellan Galleries in Sauchiehall Street, turn right onto Sauchiehall Street, then turn right again onto Dalhousie Street. Walk up the hill for 50 metres and you will come to Glasgow School of Art on the corner with Renfrew Street.

Glasgow School of Art is often referred to as Charles Rennie Mackintosh's greatest architectural achievement, and it offers informative guided tours through the main corridors and rooms to finish in one of Mackintosh's most celebrated interiors, the Mackintosh Library. Daily tours are run from Monday to Saturday. Admission charges apply.

From the School of Art, turn left and continue west along Renfrew Street, then turn right from Renfrew Street into Garnet Street, continue along Garnet Street, past Hill Street, then turn left into Buccleuch Street.

Continue along Buccleuch Street for 20 metres and you will find the Tenement House on your left hand side. More than any other Scottish city, Glasgow is associated with many fine tenement buildings. This late Victorian flat presents a fascinating picture of domestic life at the beginning of the 20th century. The Tenement House is run by the National Trust for Scotland, and is open from March to October (afternoons only). Admission charges apply.

On leaving the Tenement House, turn left and follow the road round to the left and go down the stairs. Walk uphill onto Renfrew Street and take the first turning to your right into Garnet Street and walk down onto Sauchiehall Street. Turn left and you will be facing towards the city centre.

There are two more visitor attractions on Sauchiehall Street. The Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) is located just before the corner of Sauchiehall Street and Pitt Street. It features galleries and performance spaces, plus it has a 74 seat cinema. An extensive temporary exhibition and performance arts programme operates throughout the year. The CCA also houses the Tempus café-bar and the CCA Bar. Admission is free.

Turn left when you leave the CCA and continue along Sauchiehall Street eastwards towards the city centre, and you will find the McLellan Galleries on your left hand side.

At this point in Sauchiehall Street, you enter the pedestrianised section of the street. Across on your right you will see the Willow Tearooms situated between Rose Street and Cambridge Street.

Originally designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1904, The Willow Tearooms remain open to visitors keen to experience the splendour of a bygone era by having tea just as people did in the same rooms and interiors 100 years ago. The Willow Tearooms are open daily.

After stopping at The Willow Tearooms, you can continue your walking tour within the pedestrianised area of Sauchiehall Street, heading east towards Buchanan Galleries, one of the city's shopping malls.

From Buchanan Galleries, walk down the pedestrianised Buchanan Street, where you will enter the city centre. After crossing the junction with St Vincent Street, the Gallery of Modern Art can be found through the arches of Royal Exchange Square on your left hand side.
